As our reality changed in early spring, Sandwich Sisters pods in Toronto came together to deliver sandwiches to the homeless communities. You can help them reach 100,000 sandwiches by December as the food shortage becomes more apparent.  

Here we explore the motivation of ladies in Toronto who starting making sandwiches for those in need as the pandemic took hold.

One thousand children under 14 each year in Canada are newly diagnosed with cancer. There to support those kids, their families, and advance the research is the Childhood Cancer Canada Foundation. 

We have made such strides in lowering infant mortality and prolonged life expectancy that we could be forgiven for overlooking the fact that there are 10,000 kids in Canada with cancer. As we age, the likelihood is that we will know someone else impacted by cancer. Children diagnosed with cancer can feel socially isolated as none of their friends are experiencing the same emotional situation. Here we explore the inspiring work of Childhood Cancer Canada and learn more about the Breakaway Kids Cancer Cycling Adventure.

Preoperative stoma site marking position statement case study

A joint Canadian position statement between Nurses Specialized in Wound, Ostomy & Continence and colorectal surgeons marks a poignant step. This case study explores the process of this collaboration been nurses and physicians to improve outcomes for patients undergoing ostomy surgery. 

The body of literature is emphatic that preoperative site marking should be mandatory in elective cases. This position statement reinforces the necessity to have NSWOC and surgeons available at all times for emergency case interventions for stoma site marking. This project brought together 20 specialist nurses and surgeons from across Canada. It resulted in a position statement, practice enabler and video.

There is now an optimism that the once fragmented players in Waterloo Region are beginning to coalesce in support of scaling health tech.

Waterloo Medtech has just launched their latest proceedings report discussed here. The new Medical Innovation Xchange in Kitchener opened in January. Communitech has announced a new Velocity micro VC-fund for the medtech sector. Google is opening an accelerator in the region.
