30th anniversary of transforming lives after spinal cord injury
“We’ve been supporting people with spinal cord injury for over 30 years. As we celebrate our 30th anniversary, we’ve set ourselves a challenge: to reach even more people, raise awareness of the issues they face, to celebrate their achievements and bring people together for change. Our aim is for everyone affected by spinal cord injury to live the life they want and receive the support they need to fulfill their potential.” – Louise Wright, Back Up’s CEO.”
Founder, Mike Nemesvary began the charity in 1986 following a skiing accident. The charity’s compassion is underpinned through a deep understanding of the challenges impacting someone with a spinal cord injury.
Guardian Charity Award winner 2014
The Guardian newspaper recognized Back Up with a 2014 Charity award for their work, which includes support for younger people. They noted that “Each year 1,000 people will sustain a spinal cord injury in the UK through accident or illness. It could be something as simple as falling down the stairs. [Back Up] helps around 60% of those newly injured and believes it should not prevent anyone from getting the most out of life”.
Back Up has tailored out-reach programs for under 18s and young people as well as school education services.
